Quenching Oils and Heat Treatment Fluids Selection Guide

Quenching oil and heat treatment fluids are designed for rapid or controlled cooling of steel or other metals as part of a hardening, tempering or other heat-treating process. Quenching oil serves two primary functions. It facilitates hardening of steel by controlling heat transfer during quenching, and it enhances wetting of steel during

Quenching and heat transfer oils [SubsTech]

Heat transfer oils are oils formulated to serve as a fluid media in closed and open liquid phase heat transfer systems. Oil used in closed systems may be used at temperatures up to 550°F (288°C). The hot oil must not come into a contact with air because of the possible oxidation and ignition.

11: Heat Treating and Quenching Flashcards Quizlet

Oil is more gentle than water or brine when used as a quenching medium. Therefore, it is used for more critical parts, such as parts that have thin sections or sharp edges. For example, metal used for razor blades, springs, and knife blades are typically quenched in oil. Since oil quenching is a less violent technique than water quenching, the

Oil Quench --- What Type to Use? Heat Treating Knives

Jun 20, 2013· I use canola to quench my 5160 blades. If it's fairly new and clear, should be good; if it's dark and kind of murky, better to get fresh. Preheat a bit to around 120 to 130 Fahrenheit. You can also use mineral oil, and preheat closer to 150 to 160. The mineral oil's a bit faster, but canola seems to harden nicely on 5160.

Compilation and Validation of Heat Transfer Coefficients

Quenching is a heat treatment method that has been used for many thousands of years and is still of importance today. The process is performed to change the microstructure of metals and in turn their mechanical properties. The cooling rate must be fast enough so that a phase transformation occurs to a required microstructure.

Quenching Wikipedia

In materials science, quenching is the rapid cooling of a workpiece in water, oil or air to obtain certain material properties.A type of heat treating, quenching prevents undesired low-temperature processes, such as phase transformations, from occurring. It does this by reducing the window of time during which these undesired reactions are both thermodynamically favorable, and kinetically
